ACTIVITIES


The focus of GINKS as a network is to use ICT as a tool for poverty alleviation by facilitating the work of network members and encouraging knowledge sharing on ICT for Development. We are currently focused on two thematic areas namely: Health and Agriculture with  Education and Gender as cross cutting themes.

BACKGROUND


To GINKS information is a vital resource aimed at enabling its members to enhance their development efforts and engage in meaningful planning and implementation of programmes and activities through acquiring, organizing, sharing and facilitating the exchange of information. The emphasis on networking as a strategy is to enable the membership achieves the following:

OBJECTIVES

  • Acquire new ideas, designs and perspectives through effective horizontal and vertical interaction and making use of new ways of relating with each other such as the e-mail, internet, and other new electronic communication innovations.
  • Promote linkage building among each other and other actors of civil society. This will ensure that like-minded groups and institutions around a shared development agenda are brought together and facilitated to engage in more systematic communication, sharing of information, experiences and ideas towards the common goal of poverty alleviation.
  • Influence public policy through setting up shared platforms for policy analysis and advocacy on issues affecting the information “have nots”

Areas of concern for effective networking include: ICT and Health, ICT and Education, ICT and Environment, ICT and Gender, ICT and Youth among others


STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES

  • Interactions with rural communities to identify development partners who will work with GINKS to address the information needs of local communities.
  • Co-organising monthly seminars on ICT4D issues with BusyInternet called the cyberseries
  • An online space for networking through the GINKS mailing list and GINKS portal.
  • Co –organising information exchange events with development partners for members of the network with other stakeholder participation
  • Working with organisations such as ITAfrica.org to generate and disseminate local ICT4D content
