GINKS is celebrating 4 years of being a base of information and knowledge sharing for all facets of the economy. As part of the anniversary week celebrations, GINKS organized a workshop for Ring Road One Basic School; an institution which is quite disadvantaged in terms of being in touch with the opportunities ICT presents as against their contemporaries in other schools with ICT facilities.
The workshop dubbed “Open Day with Student” was mainly for the purpose of introducing the students to basic computer skills. Mr. Edward Addo-Dankwa, a member of the GINKS board welcomed 34 students and 2 teachers from the school and gave a brief introduction of GINKS and its activities. He then encouraged that Information they will acquire from the days experience will go a long way to boost their confidence and prepare them for the future. He advised them to pay close attention to the facilitators in order to benefit from the workshop.
The introduction which was very interactive and hinted to the students that ICT refers to phones, computers, TV, radio-and that development is progressing far rapidly with the use of ICTs. With Ghana as a case in point, he said that “We are in a system where ICT tools have become very important such that the chalk and the blackboard are no longer as relevant as they used to be”. He thus warned that if they don’t learn now, it might be too late tomorrow.
Another board member of GINKS, Mrs. Agnes Adjabeng expressed great joy in seeing that girls were effectively represented at the training. She assured them that the ICT will enable them gain access to information, which they are going to need at every point in time from now.
Eric Acquaye and Rolland Allotey took the students through the basics of computers – i.e. typing, create e-mails, research, types of storage devices an so on.
The two hour training went on and the following topics were treated; introduction to computers, computer hardware, creating document folders, computer software, how to use Microsoft word, how to save file in Microsoft word, etc. Instructors also taught them how to browse the Internet and check their emails and how to save files on storage devices such as pen drives and diskettes.
There was an impressive feedback from students as was expected. They immediately got hooked up to the internet and wanted to explore more.
Mr. Edward Addo-Dankwa encouraged the students to utilize and maximize every opportunity to enjoy ICT. He told them to be serious with their books as they will not be able to use ICT wisely and effectively. Finally, he said to them to be cautious of AIDS and said “AIDS is real, be careful and do not go into something when you are not ready for it”.
